Ethnic minority’s embroidery from Southwest of Guizhou Province in China

Background 

In southwest of China ethnic minority areas, there live mostly Tibetan, Miao people, Dong people, Yi people, Bai people, Shui people, Hani people, Naxi people and so on. Embroidery skill is widespread around those minorities, in particular useful in women costume. In southwest of Guizhou Province in China, Miao and Dong people made the skill of embroidery excellent.

History 

Although there are many types of embroidery among ethnic minorities of China, the Miao and Dong’s are truly unique. It has been handed down through generations dating back to 220 BC. It is still kept alive today. It is being cherished by both native people and visitors. Since most of the Miao people have no written script, so they have to record their culture and daily life through the embroidery. Therefore, embroidery is also called “the history book wearing on the body.”
