The skill of embroidery

According to ancient books, we know that embroidery can be mainly categorized into Parallel Lines Embroidery, Broken Thread Embroidery, Braid Embroidery, Appliqué Embroidery, Peach Blossom Embroidery, Convex Embroidery, and so on. In the following part I will explain them one by one. 

Parallel Lines Embroidery focuses on beauty and symmetry in the layout of the pattern and color. What Miao people used most frequently is the skill of Parallel Lines Embroidery. It is tantamount to embroider with two needles together. It’s simple, ingenious and flat, which is appropriate for embroidering small figures. Miao people first pasted cutting—paper and silk together for the base ship. Then they, according to a paper pattern, embroidered in a parallel lines way. This skill is mainly applied in embroidering collar, shoulder, sleeve, lappet and bodice of women costume. 

Broken Thread Embroidery is to break a thread by hand into 8 to 16 thinner threads, and then to broider them in groups. As the threads are tiny, the broidering pattern is very flat and exquisite. Broken thread embroidery in Tai River among Miao people is more famous. The water clouds pattern, figure pattern and dragon pattern are the most prestigious.

Braid Embroidery is to braid 6 to 15 threads by hand into colorful braids, and then to match the pattern to flat on the silk using silk threads to fasten. In the area of Qing River, the pattern flower, fish, bird, dragon, and the mountain is made among Miao women custom by braiding embroidery.

Appliqué Embroidery, just as its name implies using different colors to create a silk pattern, on the border with threads to fasten on a cloth. A luck pattern in red, green, blue, and yellow silk is designed for the diamond ship, which is more common in Miao people’s custom. 

Convex Embroidery uses multilevel embroidery and different colors to enhance the stereoscopic and layers. 

Peach Blossom Embroidery is to insert the needle in the cloth, round thread on the needle, and then to take out the needle, which needs high attention while making.
